7 Days/6 Nights - Hiking Alaska’s Inside Passage — This trip offers the best hiking and wildlife viewing – grizzlies and black bears, moose, bald eagles, humpback whales - in some of the most beautiful, renowned locations in Alaska - Juneau, Skagway & Glacier Bay National Park. Easy to moderate.
Day 1 – Fly to Juneau. Overnight in a local hotel.
Day 2 – Mid morning meet your trip leaders and fellow explorers for an orientation meeting. After a get acquainted lunch, we shuttle to the trailhead where our hike begins. We follow a gentle trail, flanked by wildflowers, that was once as a gold miner’s thoroughfare up to the old Perserverance Mine. We return to town early enough to allow some free time to visit other Juneau historic sites before our festive dinner at the hotel in which we are staying on this our first night of the tour. (lunch and dinner)
Day 3 – This morning we fly up the Lynn Canal, the longest, narrowest fjord in North America to Haines – a picturesque town on the shores of the Lynn Canal at the base of the Chilkat Mountains. Upon arrival in Haines, we are taken to a trail in Chilkat State Park. As we hike the shoreline trail with abundant opportunities for sightings of whales, harbor seals, bald eagles, moose, grizzlies and black bears - we can see the Chilkat Inlet, Rainbow and Davidson Glaciers, and Mount Riley (if it is a clear day) At the completion of the hike, we board a fast ferry to the historic gold rush town of Skagway. We check in to the Skagway hotel that will our lodging for the next two nights. Tonight we dine at a local gourmet seafood café. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)
Day 4 – After a tasty, stick-to-your-ribs breakfast, we board Alaska’s Gold Rush Train for a ride on the White Pass & Yukon Railway, one of the steepest railways in the world. built to enable easier access up into the Klondike gold fields. We take the railway to the Mile 5.8 where we get off at the trailhead and begin hiking up through birch and hemlock forests to Elway Falls, where we reboard the train for lunch and the remaining journey over White Pass to Fraser, British Columbia. We motor back to Skagway via scenic South Klondike Highway. Day 5 – This morning we fly into Glacier Bay National Park to Gustavus, located at the mouth of Glacier Bay Inlet for a day of sea kayaking and hiking. We spend the next 2 nights in a lodge on Glacier Bay. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)
Day 6 – Today is a full day of wildlife and glacier viewing as we cruise through spectacluar Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve which boasts the highest concentration of tidewater glaciers in the world. Here we often get to see and hear huge slabs of ice loudly breaking off glaciers and splashing into the Bay. After our excursion we return to our lodge for a cocktail reception and our last dinner together as a group. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)
Day 7 – This morning after breakfast we hike through a beautiful forest and out to the Bartlett River estuary where geese, ducks and other waterfowl abound. After our farewell lunch back at our lodge on Glacier Bay, we are taken back to Gustavus for our short flight to Juneau International Airport where our trip ends and everyone departs for home. (breakfast, lunch)
INCLUSIONS & COSTS
Includes 6 nights casual hotel/lodge accommodations (1 night pre-trip and 5 nights on trip) , 6 days guided hiking and activities, most meals, all guides, internal air. Group size 1-12 persons. USD $4,200 per person based on double occupancy.
